Gum Sandarac
Authentic Natural Resin Gum Sandarac from Morocco. A non-water-soluble natural resin used in iconography and painting for making varnish. Gum sandarac, mixed with linseed oil, was the most commonly used varnish during the 16th and 17th centuries.

- It dissolves in alcohol, ether, amyl alcohol, and acetone

- It is derived from the Callitris quadrivalvis tree

For the creation of varnish, there have been many recipes over the centuries. The most famous varnish made with gum sandarac is Vernice Liquida, which was long considered the best varnish for paintings and was mentioned by Leonardo da Vinci (da Vinci and Chastel 2003) and was most likely also used on Byzantine icons (Vieillescazes et al. 2005).
