The marbling technique is inspired by the ancient Japanese technique of marbling on rice paper in the 11th century (Sumi nagashi) and similar bookbinding techniques in Europe during the 19th century. It is the process of transferring colours by dipping the object to be decorated into the marbled surface. Marbling can be used on surfaces such as fabric, paper, cardboard, recycled paper, wood, plaster, and more. For fabric, iron the fabric after dyeing to stabilize the colours.
- The basin with the marbling thickening medium can be used multiple times for consecutive projects. However, it is recommended to use a small amount of thickening medium and change the water frequently.
- It is recommended to conduct tests before decorating the final object.

Instructions for Preparing the Basin and Marbling Technique
- The basin with the thickening medium and water should be prepared in advance
- Add 2 teaspoons (7g) of Marbling Pebeo thickening medium to 1 liter of cold water
- Mix very well and let the mixture sit for 2 hours
- Pour 1 to 2 centimeters of the mixture into a plastic basin or tray that is larger than the object you want to decorate
- Using the dropper, add a few drops of your chosen colours into the basin with water. Ideally, use alternating light and dark colours
- Allow the colours to spread slightly before using a stick or straw to create your designs.
- You can create various designs with the stick, such as stripes, combed patterns, etc.
- Once you’ve completed your desired designs, carefully apply the object, paper, or fabric to the surface of the mixture.
- Leave it there for 10 to 15 seconds and then remove it
- Quickly rinse with water to remove any excess gel mixture and colours that may be present
- Place the decorated object on a flat surface and allow it to dry
