Saint Gregory Palamas and the Hesychast Movement
In the person of Saint Gregory Palamas, the Hesychast movement, with its distant history, found its closest exponent and representative in the 14th century. During that time, it demonstrated the power of prayer and asceticism in the Church, which silently brings the Christian to holiness and leads them towards the deification of their human existence.
This movement, as it developed with monasticism in the 14th century, spread more widely and became a cause for the Orthodox, amidst difficult circumstances, to experience a spiritual renewal. It nourished the people spiritually for a long period, covering the entirety of the Ottoman occupation
