What is and is not an icon
The Orthodox teaching is clear: The icon is a liturgical object, a point of divine presence, a place of encounter between the created and the uncreated. This gradually led to certain principles, based on which the distinction is made between a religious/liturgical icon and a simple artwork/painting.
